History
DJ’ing began at the root of Hip-Hop’s conception: in the Bronx in New York. The DJ’s job was to spin popular records that kept people dancing and kept the party alive. It was this push to keep everybody dancing that led to the development of techniques that became the staples of turntablism.
DJ Kool Herc was the DJ that was credited with the innovation that laid down the blueprint for Hip-Hop DJ’s: beat mixing. A Jamaican immigrant, DJ Kool Herc quickly created a name for himself in the early 70’s by fusing together chunks of songs that were popular with dancers into one long musical collage.
DJ'ing has since evolved beyond simply playing popular songs and mixing them together: DJ's began to manipulate and even create music through the use of their tools: two turntables and a mixer, otherwise refered to as "the wheels of steel." Today, in the digital age, CD DJ's are increasing in popularity, however die-hard turntable enthusiasts still swear by their Technics 1200SL turntables, the industry standard over the past two decades.
